Climate change has grown more apparent in recent years with people becoming more aware of its potentially disastrous consequences. Flooding is one of the many consequences of a changing climate in Malawi known to cause immense devastation resulting in the loss of lives, property, and infrastructure not sparring irrigation infrastructure.
The unprecedented flooding in Karonga damaged the prominent irrigation schemes in the district, consequently making hunger imminent, given the unpredictable rain patterns. To enhance the food and income security of the people in karonga, with funding from the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) through the Program for Rural Irrigation Development (PRIDE) The Malawi Government through the department of Irrigation built the resilience of the farmers in the area, with FISD Limited Company’s expertise. FISD Construction rehabilitated the Wovwe, Hara, Ukanga and Chonanga Irrigation Schemes.
The rehabilitation works were successfully done and the schemes were handed over to the farming communities which are now using them
