The Agriculture Committee of Parliament has reiterated the need for the country to embrace irrigation farming if agriculture output is to increase, thereby improving economy The committee’s chairperson Sameer Suleman said this yesterday after visiting the Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (FISD)
Suleman said irrigation has not been given much attention like other areas in the agriculture sector The country has more water but we are failing to use that meaningfully. We are losing water each year because we are not giving this sector the attention it deserves, “Suleman said.
“Rain-fed farming has not helped us since the birth of this country. It is time we looked at other means and that’s irrigation, “he said.
Fisd director of Programmes Kondwani Nanchukwa said irrigation remains key in the process of revitalizing the agriculture sector .
“People should have access to current irrigation technologies and that’s what we are developing here, “Nanchukwa said. Fisd is a local company established in 2012 and has been a key player in irrigation and water development .
